I-35 EXPANSION PROJECT BENEFITS VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS

As a child growing up in Troy, Texas, Justin Stiehl had been inside the Extraco Bank building many times, but never under conditions like these. His parents banked there, as did many of the residents of this Central Texas town on Interstate 35. But on January 7, 2012, firefighters were making their way through the darkened, smoke-filled city landmark. Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

Lane Closures
  • The Connell Street exit ramp from US 190 W (first exit after entering US 190 from southbound I-35) has been permanently closed to allow construction of the new flyover connecting I-35 northbound to US 190 W.
  • The inside lane of the US 190 W access road from I-35 to Connell Street is closed to allow construction of flyover support columns.
Milestones
  • Set beams on the Shanklin Rd. crossover bridge.
  • Set steel girders on the US 190 westbound direct connect flyover.
  • Poured remaining columns on the I-35 northbound frontage road bridge at the Lampasas River.
Down the Road
  • Continue work on northbound frontage road from Amity Rd. to Loop 121.
  • Continue work on crossover bridge decks at Amity, Tahuaya, and Shanklin roads.
  • Set beams at Loop 121.
  • Continue work on northbound frontage road bridge at the Lampasas River.
  • Continue work on southbound frontage road from US 190 to Loop 121.
  • Continue setting girders and bridge deck on the US 190 westbound flyover.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY(N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

  • Field office at Big Elm Rd. completed.
Down the Road
  • Work expected to start in March 2012.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

Down the Road
  • Begin clearing, utilities and frontage road construction for northbound (east) frontage road from Woodlawn Rd. to S. FM 2837; southbound (west) frontage road from N. FM 2837 to FM 1695; and northbound (east) frontage road from FM 3148 to FM 2063 as right of way is acquired.
  • Begin construction of the northbound I-35 auxiliary lane between FM 2063 and SH 6 and the new northbound exit ramp under FM 2063.
  • Work on the new direct connector from FM 2113 to northbound I-35 will start later in the first 6-month period.
  • Work on the new bridges and intersections will start at S. FM 2837, N. FM 2837 and FM 1695.

Section 3C: HEWITT TO WACO (FM 2063/SUN VALLEY BLVD. TO S. LOOP 340)

Milestones
  • Opened the westbound flyover.
  • Traffic is now in final configuration.
Down the Road
  • Finishing remaining details through February.
  • Plant and vegetative establishment and maintenance will continue.
  • Anticipate completion of project by March 2012.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

Lane Closures
  • The Wiggins Rd. crossover is closed for demolition and is expected to be closed for 12-18 months. Tours Rd. (next crossing to the south) and Tokio Rd. (next crossing to the north) are open.
  • Main St. in Elm Mott is permanently closed to through traffic at the southbound frontage road.
Milestones
  • One lane on the northbound frontage road from Loop 340 to Lincoln City Rd. just north of BUS 77 have been completed, and traffic has been moved onto the new pavement.
  • Traffic is now using the new, one-way southbound frontage road from Hilltop to BUS 77.
  • Completed the retaining wall on the downstream approach of the UPRR crossing.
  • Completed the center support columns and abutments on FM 1858.
Down the Road
  • The southbound-side rest area (past exit 345A in Elm Mott) will be closed permanently starting Monday, Feb. 6, 2012.
  • Continue construction on overpasses at BUS 77, UPRR crossing, Hilltop Rd. and FM 1858/Tokio Rd.
  • Begin setting beams on FM 1858.
  • Hilltop Rd. is scheduled to be closed for demolition in March.
  • Southbound mainlane traffic will be shifted to new BUS 77 overpass.
  • Begin construction of northbound side of new BUS 77 overpass.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)

Milestones
  • Continued cutting the new frontage roads in various areas.
  • Continued installing box culverts everywhere that's accessible.
  • Continued setting concrete traffic barriers along median.
  • Changed the northbound frontage road to one lane and one-way traffic from County Line Rd. to Abest Rd.
Down the Road
  • Pour concrete for the columns on overpasses at Marable St., County Line Rd. and CR 3102.
  • Work on the roadbed for the new frontage road between Marable St. and the KOA Campground.
  • Change the northbound frontage road to one lane/one way traffic between CR 3102 and Houston St. in Abbott.
  • Install concrete traffic barriers on north- and southbound mainlanes near Abbott.
  • Continue work on box culverts and utility relocation.

Section 5C: ABBOTT TO SOUTH OF HILLSBORO (FM 1304 TO FM 310)

Lane Closures
  • Exit 362 to Chatt Rd. is closed until new exit and entrance ramps are constructed. Traffic will use Exit 359 (FM 1304) northbound and Exit 364 (FM 310) southbound to access Chatt Rd. during the closure.
Milestones
  • Continued pouring concrete pavement on north- and southbound shoulders.
  • Continued work on Cobb Creek bridge widening.
  • Continued work on new north- and southbound ramps.
Down the Road
  • Finish pouring mainlane shoulders and ramps.
  • Open most new ramps and close existing ramps.
  • Begin removing concrete barriers on mainlane shoulders.
  • Pour Cobb Creek north- and southbound bridge decks.
  • Build temporary FM 1304 exit ramp.

SAFETY REST AREAS (HILL COUNTY)

Milestones
  • Began leveling northbound-side site.
Down the Road
  • Complete excavation of sites.
  • Continue construction of embankment for roads and southbound-side building pad.
  • Complete leveling of southbound-side site and begin leveling northbound-side site.
  • Pour slab for southbound rest area.
