Building Local Economies Along with Roadways

With any road construction project, the most palpable impact is felt by the motorists and businesses along the construction route: traffic delays. They can inconvenience the casual traveler and regular customers alike. Wrecks, Waiting — Why?

Construction updates

Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

Milestones
  • Began installing traffic barriers June 4.
  • Groundbreaking in Salado June 7.
Down the road
  • Continue installing traffic barriers and install erosion controls.
  • Prepare right of way around Main St. and FM 2268.
  • Begin constructing temporary pavement near Main St. on the south end of the project.
  • Begin constructing temporary pavement for the northbound frontage road at FM 2268.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

Lane CLOSUREs
  • West Shanklin Rd. at the southbound frontage road will remain closed until June 23.
  • The northbound frontage road at Tahuaya Rd. and the Tahuaya Rd. crossover bridge are expected to be closed June 18-July 3.
Milestones
  • Poured the bridge deck on the northbound frontage road over the Lampasas River.
Down the Road
  • Work on the northbound frontage road at Tahuaya Rd.
  • Demolish the existing Tahuaya Rd. crossover and construct the new Tahuaya Rd. crossover bridge.
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road from Amity Rd. to Loop 121.
  • Continue work on the southbound frontage road from US 190 to Loop 121.
  • Continue work on the rail on the Loop 121 bridge and the northbound frontage road bridge over the Lampasas River.
  • Continue work on the intersections on West Amity and West Shanklin roads, connecting to the new southbound frontage road.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

  • Began constructing retaining walls near Little Elm Bridge.
Down the Road
  • Continue relocating utilities.
  • Begin constructing the embankment at the south end of the project.
  • Continue constructing retaining walls near Little Elm Creek.
  • Continue culvert work and begin bridge construction for Little Elm Creek.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

Down the Road
  • Groundbreaking is Thursday, June 14, at 10 am next to the Bruceville-Eddy city hall on Wilcox Dr.
  • Work begins on Monday, June 25.
  • Continue right-of-way acquisitions and utility relocations.
  • Close a small portion of the southbound frontage road around Big Elm Creek to demolish the existing bridge & begin construction of the new structure.
  • Clear right of way for construction of the new southbound frontage road.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

Milestones
  • Began work on bridge on northbound frontage road over S. Cow Bayou, just south of Woodlawn Rd.
Down the Road
  • Continue relocating utilities as right of way becomes available.
  • Continue installing pavement for the northbound frontage road from S. Old Bruceville Rd. to Woodlawn Rd., along the southbound frontage road from N. FM 2837 to FM 1695, and along the northbound frontage road from FM 3148 to FM 2063.
  • Continue working on the bridges at Bullhide Creek, S. FM 2837 and N. FM 2837.
  • Continue work on the bridge on the northbound frontage road over S. Cow Bayou.
  • Pave new northbound auxiliary mainlane and the new exit ramp under FM 2063/Sun Valley Blvd.
  • Close Woodlawn Dr. on the east side of I-35 to place new culvert and roadway (expect traffic detour).

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

Down the Road
  • Groundbreaking is Friday, June 29, at 10 am at the parking lot on the southwest corner of the I-35 crossing over the Brazos River (across I-35 from the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum).
  • Work to begin the week of July 9.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

Lane Closures
  • The Wiggins Rd. crossover is closed for demolition and is expected to be closed until next spring. Tours Rd. (next crossing to the south) and Tokio Rd. (next crossing to the north) are open.
  • Main St. in Elm Mott is permanently closed to through traffic at the southbound frontage road.
Milestones
  • Completed bridge deck for the new BUS 77 overpass.
  • Opened new northbound exit ramp to Crest Dr.
  • Opened new southbound entrance ramp from Crest Dr.
  • Shifted intersection traffic at Craven Ave. and Meyers Ln. to new pavement.
Down the Road
  • Open the northbound entrance ramp from Craven Ave.
  • Complete the northbound frontage road between N. Loop 340 and BUS 77.
  • Set the retaining wall panels at FM 1858.
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road between Tours Rd. and FM 1858.
  • Begin work on southbound frontage road between Tours Rd. and Old Dallas Rd.
  • Complete work on Craven Ave. and Meyers Ln. intersections.
  • Begin reconstruction of Crest Dr. intersection.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)

Milestones
  • Began excavation for the new northbound frontage road from County Line Rd. to Abbott.
  • Moved traffic onto temporary pavement.
  • Began demo of the FM 1242 overpass.
  • Began work on the center section of the mainlanes at the FM 1242 overpass.
Down the Road
  • Continue work on the northbound and southbound frontage roads, as well as the center section of the FM 1242 overpass.
  • Continue work on box culverts at various locations.
  • Place bridge beams on the Marable Overpass (expect nighttime mainlane closures) and begin forming the bridge deck.
  • Continue work on the County Line Rd. overpass.
  • Place retaining wall panels at the HCR 3102 bridge abutment.

Section 5C: ABBOTT TO SOUTH OF HILLSBORO (FM 1304 TO FM 310)

Milestones
  • Finished all concrete pavement at ramps and mainlane shoulders.
  • Opened all remaining ramps.
Down the Road
  • Hook up project lighting.
  • Lay the final layer of hot-mix asphalt on the frontage roads.
  • Paint final striping on the mainlanes and frontage roads.

SAFETY REST AREAS (HILL COUNTY)

Milestones
  • Poured slab on the northbound side.
  • Began constructing the main building on the southbound side.
  • Laid the asphalt layer for parking areas on southbound side.
  • Constructed the dirt base for parking areas on the northbound side.

  • Prepare the southbound parking areas for concrete paving.
  • Prepare the northbound parking areas for asphalt layer.
  • Continue work on the southbound building.
  • Continue work on the southbound picnic areas.
