Spanning the Brazos: A New Gateway to Central Texas

Friday, August 6, was a significant milestone for the I-35 Expansion Project and the city of Waco. A groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction on two new bridges on I-35 across the Brazos River. Community Meetings Next Phase of I-35 Expansion Outreach

It wasn't long after Mayor Danney McCort was sworn into office that he picked up the phone asking for a meeting between TxDOT, I-35 contractor James Construction Group and the citizens of Salado. It seemed necessary. After all, work was about to be in full swing on the much-talked-about I-35 Expansion Project through Salado. With about a mile of the interstate inside the western edge of the city limits, McCort was fielding questions about the project. Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

Milestones
  • Cleared right of way around Main St. and FM 2268.
  • Completed temporary pavement at the south end of Main St.
Down the road
  • Construct temporary pavement on the northbound frontage road near FM 2268.
  • Continue relocating utilities.
  • Begin reconstructing the south end of Main St.
  • Begin construction on the southbound frontage road near FM 2268.
  • Begin drill shafts and retaining walls for the new FM 2268 and northbound frontage road bridges.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

Lane CLOSUREs
  • The northbound frontage road from Grove Rd. to Loop 121 in Belton will be closed July 9–July 31, including the northbound Loop 121 exit ramp (exit 292) from the mainlanes.
Milestones
  • Opened the new Tahuaya Rd. crossover bridge and the northbound and southbound frontage road intersections.
  • Completed the new intersections for West Amity and West Shanklin roads.
Down the Road
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road from Amity Rd. to Loop 121.
  • Continue work on the southbound frontage road from US 190 to Loop 121.
  • Continue work on the bridge rail on the northbound frontage road bridge at the Lampasas River.
  • Begin work on the northbound frontage road intersection at Loop 121.
  • Begin work on the I-35 northbound mainlanes from the Lampasas River to Shanklin Rd.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

  • Began constructing the embankment at the south end of the project.
  • Completed retaining walls near Little Elm Creek.
  • Began bridge construction for Little Elm Creek.
Down the Road
  • Continue relocating utilities.
  • Continue excavation and embankment on the south end of the project.
  • Continue work on culverts.
  • Continue bridge construction at Little Elm Creek.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

Milestones
  • Began work on Monday, June 25.
  • Closed a small portion of the southbound frontage road near Big Elm Creek and began demolition of the existing bridge.
Down the Road
  • Continue demolition of the Big Elm Creek bridge.
  • Continue clearing new right of way.
  • Continue right-of-way acquisitions and utility relocations.
  • Begin construction of the new Big Elm Creek frontage-road bridge.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

LANE CLOSURES
  • Woodlawn Rd. is closed on the east side of I-35 until Aug. 3. Detours are in place, with signs in place to assist drivers in the alternate route.
Milestones
  • Paved new northbound auxiliary mainlane and new exit ramp under FM 2063/Sun Valley Blvd.
  • Closed Woodlawn Rd. on the east side of I-35 to place the new culvert and roadway.
Down the Road
  • Continue relocating utilities as right of way becomes available.
  • Continue installing pavement for the northbound frontage road from S. Old Bruceville Rd. to Woodlawn Rd., along the southbound frontage road from N. FM 2837 to FM 1695, and along the northbound frontage road from FM 3148 to FM 2063.
  • Continue working on the bridges at Bullhide Creek, S. FM 2837 and N. FM 2837.
  • Continue work on the bridge on the northbound frontage road over S. Cow Bayou.
  • Continue work on Woodlawn Rd.

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

Milestones
  • Groundbreaking held Friday, July 6, at 10 a.m.
  • Work began July 9.
Down the Road

Most work will concentrate in the northwest quadrant for the next six months.

  • Clear and prepare new right of way.
  • Install erosion control and move utilities.
  • Begin constructing detours for traffic control around business sites.
  • Shift Buzzard Billy's inbound and outbound traffic to east side of I-35, connecting to MLK.
  • General excavation and preparation for bridge work at the river.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

Lane Closures
  • The Wiggins Rd. crossover is closed for demolition and is expected to be closed for 12 to 18 months. Tours Rd. (next crossing to the south) and Tokio Rd. (next crossing to the north) are open.
  • Main St. in Elm Mott is permanently closed to through traffic at the southbound frontage road.
  • Section of BUS 77/Old Dallas Rd. to be closed for reconstruction before school resumes.
Milestones
  • Completed Craven Ave. and Meyers Ln. intersections.
  • Shifted southbound frontage road traffic to the new UPRR overpass.
Down the Road
  • Open the northbound entrance ramp from Craven Ave.
  • Complete the northbound frontage road between N. Loop 340 and BUS 77.
  • Set the retaining wall panels at FM 1858.
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road between Tours Rd. and FM 1858.
  • Begin work on southbound frontage road between Tours Rd. and Old Dallas Rd.
  • Begin reconstruction of Crest Dr. intersection.
  • Open new southbound exit ramp to N. Loop 340.
  • Start work for BUS 77 intersection.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)

Milestones
  • Set beams on the Marable St. crossover bridge.
  • Placed the retaining wall panels at HCR 3102.
Down the Road
  • Continue work on the northbound and southbound frontage roads.
  • Continue work on box culverts.
  • Continue work on the County Line Rd. overpass.
  • Open the temporary southbound exit ramp to County Line Rd.
  • Re-route traffic around the existing County Line Road Rd. intersection on the southbound side.
  • Pour concrete for the new Marable St. bridge deck.

Section 5C: ABBOTT TO SOUTH OF HILLSBORO (FM 1304 TO FM 310)

Milestones
  • Laid the final layer of hot-mix asphalt on the frontage roads.
Down the Road
  • Complete final striping on the mainlanes and frontage roads.
  • Install permanent erosion control devices.
  • Complete lighting installation.
  • Install final signs.

Milestones
  • Completed laying asphalt for northbound parking areas.
Down the Road
  • Begin paving southbound parking areas.
  • Continue work on southbound building.
