LANE CONSTRUCTION, TXDOT RECOGNIZED FOR WORK ZONE SAFETY EFFORTS

Construction updates

Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

Lane Closures
  • The frontage road on the east side of I-35 has been converted to one-way northbound from Thomas Arnold Rd. to N. Main St. as crews reconstruct the roadway in
    this area. Additionally, during the construction work, the access road will be closed (one lane at a time) as it is rebuilt. One-way operation will be permanent, except
    for a short period in early 2013, when the stretch from Thomas Arnold Rd. to Van Bibber Rd. will be temporarily converted to 2-way for the next phase of construction.
  • The left lane is closed on the I-35 southbound frontage road from FM 2268 to FM 2843. This is a long term closure.
Milestones
  • Began construction of the ramp for the bridge just north of FM 2268.
  • Began construction of the southbound frontage road from Sparrow Ln. to Thomas Arnold Rd.
  • Began construction of the FM 2484 bridge.
Down the Road
  • Continue the relocation of utilities.
  • Continue the reconstruction of South Main St.
  • Continue construction of the retaining walls, the northbound frontage road, and concrete pavement on the southbound frontage road around FM 2268.
  • Continue work on the culvert just north of Thomas Arnold Rd.
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road from Thomas Arnold Rd. to Salado Plaza.
  • Continue construction of the ramp for the bridge just north of FM 2268.
  • Continue construction of the southbound frontage road from Sparrow Ln. to Thomas Arnold Rd.
  • Continue construction of the FM 2484 bridge.
  • Begin work on the bridge ramp located on the southbound frontage road between Sparrow and Blue Jay Ln.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

  • Completed the bridge rail for the northbound frontage bridge over the Lampasas River.
  • Demolished the old Loop 121 bridge.
Down the road
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road from Tahuaya Rd. to Loop 121.
  • Continue work on the northbound main lanes from the Lampasas River to Shanklin Rd.
  • Continue work on the northbound mainlanes and culverts from FM 2484 to Tahuaya Rd.
  • Begin construction of the phase 2 portion of the new Loop 121 bridge.

Section 2B: TEMPLE (S. LOOP 363 TO N. LOOP 363)

  • Bids opened and contractor chosen Thursday, Sept. 6.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

lane closures
  • Kevin Reily Drive (0.4 miles north of N. Loop 363) will be closed until further notice as the contractor works on the southbound frontage road. (Access will be maintained for the business on the street.)
Milestones
  • Began work on the retaining wall at the new intersection south of Troy.
Down the Road
  • Continue relocating utilities.
  • Continue excavation and embankment on the south end of the project.
  • Continue work on the Little Elm Creek southbound frontage road bridge.
  • Continue work on the culvert and riprap on the south end of project.
  • Begin paving Old Waco Rd.
  • Begin detour work between northbound and southbound mainlanes at the south end of the project.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

lane closures
  • Until fall 2013, the southbound frontage road will be closed from Roberts Cemetery to Big Elm Rd. This will allow the demolition and rebuilding of the new frontage road and bridge over Big Elm Creek. Frontage-road traffic traveling south from Big Elm Rd. will have to enter the freeway, except for local traffic only, south of Big Elm Creek. A temporary turnaround has been constructed near Roberts Cemetery.
mILESTONES
  • Hung beams on the new southbound frontage road bridge at Deer Creek.
  • Stopped work temporarily near Roberts Cemetery in Troy to excavate, research, and remove undocumented burials. (Remains will be re-interred in cooperation with the cemetery association.)
Down the Road
  • Continue work on the new southbound frontage road bridges at Big Elm Creek and Deer Creek.
  • Continue excavation and embankment along the new southbound frontage road between Big Elm Creek and FM 107.
  • Begin placing the road base for the new southbound frontage road.
  • Begin construction of Old Moody Rd. and Grider St. in Bruceville-Eddy.
  • Continue the relocation of utilities.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

mILESTONES
  • Completed the spillway from the stock pond controlling outfall from South Cow Bayou.
  • Completed the bridge deck for the northbound frontage road at South Cow Bayou.
  • Began the FM 2113 flyover support columns.
  • Began the FM 1695 (Hewitt Dr.)/FM 3148 (Moonlight Dr.) underpass.
  • Began construction of the northbound frontage road between Woodlawn Rd and S. FM 2837.
Down the Road
  • Continue relocating utilities as right of way becomes available.
  • Continue installing pavement for the new northbound frontage road from S. Old Bruceville Rd. to FM 2837; from FM 3148 (Moonlight Dr.) to FM 2063/Sun Valley Rd; and along the southbound frontage road from N. FM 2837 to FM 1695/Hewitt Dr.
  • Complete support columns in median for S. FM 2837 and N. FM 2837.
  • Set beams for both FM 2837 underpasses (this work will require full mainlane closures).
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road over S. Cow Bayou.
  • Begin pouring abutments, columns and caps on the northbound frontage road at North Cow Bayou.
  • Continue pouring the bridge rail at Bullhide Creek.

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

mILESTONES
  • Completed the landing for barge work in the river.
  • Moved barges and cranes into the river.
  • Completed the initial detour for access to Buzzard Billy’s.
  • Began drilling shafts for the southbound frontage road bridge pylons.
  • Installed the new bridgecam on the rooftop of Baylor’s Clifton Robinson Tower and posted to Waco District Traffic camera site.
Down the Road
  • Continue the relocation of utilities.
  • Continue stabilizing ground and placing box culverts.
  • Begin constructing drill shafts/bridge foundations for the southbound frontage road in the northwest quadrant.

SECTION 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

LANE CLOSURES
  • The Wiggins Rd. crossover is closed for demolition and is expected to be closed for 12 to 18 months. Tours Rd. (next crossing to the south) and Tokio Rd. (next crossing to the north) are open.
  • Main St. in Elm Mott is permanently closed to through traffic at the southbound frontage road.
  • On Aug. 8, the Hilltop Rd. bridge will be closed for the intersection/bridge reconstruction. The segment of the southbound frontage road from Meadowlawn Rd. to Hilltop will be permanently converted to one way. This closure is expected to last for 12-18 months, and completion of the reconstruction is anticipated in late 2013 or early 2014. Crossings at FM 308 to the south and Ross Rd. to the north will be open.
  • The exit and entrance ramps to/from Wiggins will be closed until the new northbound mainlanes are completed.

  • Traffic switched to the new northbound frontage road from just north of Tours Rd. to FM 1858/Tokio Rd.
  • The old Hilltop St. bridge was demolished.
Down the Road
  • The northbound FM 1858/Tokio Rd. exit ramp will close for up to 3 days while a temporary off-ramp is built further south.
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road between Ross Rd. and FM 1858/Tokio Rd.
  • Continue work on the southbound frontage road between Ross Rd. and Tours Rd.
  • Continue work on the southbound mainlanes between Hilltop St. and BUS 77.
  • Continue work on retaining walls at FM 1858/Tokio Rd.
  • Complete striping on section of BUS 77/Old Dallas Rd.

SECTION 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT(FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)

LANE CLOSURES
  • The southbound exit ramp to County Line Rd. has been closed and a temporary ramp opened. Traffic on the southbound frontage road will be detoured around the existing County Line Rd. crossing until the new frontage road is built, possibly as late as summer 2013.

  • Opened new northbound 2-way frontage road between Marable St. in West  and Abbott. 
  • Completed concrete pavement on east side of the Marable St. intersections.
  • Completed relocation of utilities.
  • Set beams for the County Line Rd. overpass.
  • Converted the remaining sections of the northbound frontage road between County Line Rd. and HCR 3102 to one way/one lane.
  • Completed caps and abutments and set beams for the FM 1242 overpass at Abbott.
Down the Road
  • Continue work on the southbound frontage roads and the northbound intersection at FM 1242.
  • Continue work on box culverts.
  • Continue paving the west side of the Marable St. intersections.
  • Begin forming the bridge deck for the County Line Rd. overpass.
  • Continue paving the new southbound frontage road between FM 2114 and Marable St.
  • Base work and pavement for the southbound frontage road from FM 2114 and the beginning of the project.
  • Begin removing the old northbound frontage road and preparing for the new northbound mainlanes.
  • Begin concrete pavement at the County Line Rd and HCR 3102 intersections.
  • Set deck panels and pour concrete for the FM 1242 overpass.
  • Begin the new frontage roads from FM 1242 northward and connect to the new frontage roads in the Section 5C project.
  • Move traffic to the new southbound frontage road from County Line Rd to FM 2114.
  • Begin building the new southbound main lanes on the southwest corner of the FM 2114 overpass.

SECTION 5C: ABBOTT TO SOUTH OF HILLSBORO (FM 1304 TO FM 310)

  • Ground the existing mainlanes at certain locations to smooth pavement surface.
Down the Road
  • Put the final touches on new pavement, etc.
  • Install dynamic message signs on overhead sign bridges.
  • Continue installation and connection of lighting.

SAFETY REST AREAS (HILL COUNTY)

milestones
  • Completed construction of picnic areas.
  • Completed major structural work on the main buildings.
  • Began construction of the grain-silo restroom areas.

  • Begin seeding landscape areas
  • Begin installing sidewalks and sidewalk pavers.
  • Begin/continue detail work, painting, electrical work, plumbing, interior finishing.
