Dynamic Map Available to Aid I-35 Travelers

As part of its efforts to better inform Texans about the extensive construction on I-35 in the Waco District, TxDOT has added a new level to its DriveTexas mapping tool: a dynamic traffic map that provides real-time information on closures affecting I-35. Users can find information regarding closures on main lanes, frontage roads, ramps, and cross streets, as well as real-time speeds. | Read More

Construction updates

Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

Lane Closures
  • The frontage road on the east side of I-35 has been converted to one-way northbound from Thomas Arnold Rd. to N. Main St. as crews reconstruct the roadway in this area. Additionally, during the construction work, the access road will be closed (one lane at a time) as it is rebuilt. One-way operation will be permanent, except for a short period in early 2013, when the stretch from Thomas Arnold Rd. to Van Bibber Rd. will be temporarily converted to 2-way for the next phase of construction.
  • The left lane is closed on the I-35 southbound frontage road from FM 2268 to FM 2843. This is a long-term closure.
Milestones
  • Began work on the bridge ramp on the southbound frontage road between Sparrow and Blue Jay Ln.
Down the road
  • Complete work in the center median and shift traffic to new the lanes.
  • Begin construction of the support columns for the new crossing bridge.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

Milestones
  • Began work on portions of the retaining walls at the crossover bridges.
  • Began construction of the phase 2 portion of the new Loop 121 bridge.
Down the Road
  • Begin laying concrete pavement on the northbound mainlanes from the Lampasas River to Shanklin Rd.
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road from Tahuaya Rd. to Loop 121.
  • Continue work on the northbound mainlanes and culverts from FM 2484 to Tahuaya Rd.
  • Continue work on the retaining walls at the crossover bridges.
  • Continue construction of the new Loop 121 bridge.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

Lane Closures
  • Clarence Rd. (eastbound and westbound) will continue to be closed for southbound frontage road construction until November 19 (date subject to change).
Milestones
  • Began building detour between the northbound and southbound mainlanes at the south end of the project.
Down the Road
  • Continue excavation and embankment on the south end of the project.
  • Continue work on the Little Elm Creek southbound frontage road bridge.
  • Begin paving Old Waco Rd.
  • Continue work on the detour between the northbound and southbound mainlanes at the south end of the project.
  • Begin work on the new S. Troy underpass bridge.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

lane closures
  • Until fall 2013, the southbound frontage road will be closed from Roberts Cemetery to Big Elm Rd. This will allow the demolition and rebuilding of the new frontage road and bridge over Big Elm Creek. Frontage-road traffic traveling south from Big Elm Rd. will have to enter the freeway, except for local traffic only, south of Big Elm Creek. A temporary turnaround has been constructed near Roberts Cemetery.
Milestones
  • Began building the road base for the new southbound frontage road.
  • Began construction of Old Moody Rd. and Grider St. in Bruceville-Eddy.
Down the Road
  • Complete the new southbound frontage road bridges at Big Elm Creek and Deer Creek.
  • Continue construction of the new southbound frontage road between Big Elm Creek and FM 107.
  • Continue construction of Old Moody Rd. and Grider St. in Bruceville-Eddy.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

Milestones
  • Set beams for the first phase of the South FM 2837 underpass.
  • Poured the bridge deck on the northbound frontage road over South Cow Bayou.
  • Completed all abutments, columns and caps and set beams on the northbound frontage road at North Cow Bayou.
  • Poured concrete parapet for the bridge rail for the southbound frontage road bridge at Bullhide Creek.
  • Completed all foundations (drill shafts and footings) for the FM 2113/Spring Valley Rd. flyover.
Down the Road
  • Continue relocating utilities.
  • Continue installing pavement for the new northbound frontage road from S. Old Bruceville Rd. to FM 2837; from FM 3148 (Moonlight Dr.) to FM 2063/Sun Valley Rd.; and along the southbound frontage road from N. FM 2837 to FM 1695/Hewitt Dr.
  • Complete support columns in median for S. FM 2837 and N. FM 2837.
  • Set beams for N. FM 2837 underpasses (this work will require full mainlane closures).
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road over S. Cow Bayou.
  • Begin pouring bridge deck on the northbound frontage road at N. Cow Bayou.
  • Install metal bridge rail for the southbound frontage road bridge at Bullhide Creek.
  • Continue construction of columns and caps for the FM 2113 flyover, along with  embankment, retaining wall, and pavement.
  • Set precast concrete beams on the approach end (south end) of the flyover.
  • Continue work on temporary retaining wall and detour at the FM 1695 / FM 3148 (Moonlight) underpass.

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

lane closures
  • Access roads and turnarounds under I-35 on both sides of the river are closed.
  • Access to Buzzard Billy's restaurant has been moved to the east side of I-35 until a detour on the west side is completed.
  • The sidewalk crossing under I-35 on the south side of the Brazos River is closed as construction at the river continues.
Milestones
  • Completed bore for the 24-inch Waco water line underneath the Brazos River to the east.
  • Partially ompleted stabilization of the ground in the northeast quadrant. Started stabilization in the southwest quadrant.
  • Began constructing drill shafts/bridge foundations for pylons #3 and #2 for the southbound frontage road on the west side of I-35.
Down the Road
  • Continue the relocation of utilities.
  • Continue construction of Waco sanitary sewer lines between BU Clifton Robinson tower and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame.
  • Continue stabilizing ground and placing box culverts.
  • Continue constructing drill shafts/bridge foundations for the southbound frontage road.
  • Start construction of footings for Pylon #3 for the southbound frontage road bridge.
  • Continue construction of retaining walls for Buzzard Billy's new driveway.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

Lane Closures
  • The Wiggins Rd. crossover is closed for demolition and is expected to be closed for 12-18 months. Tours Rd. (next crossing to the south) and Tokio Rd. (next crossing to the north) are open.
  • Main St. in Elm Mott is permanently closed to through traffic at the southbound frontage road.
  • The Hilltop Rd. bridge is closed for the intersection/bridge reconstruction. The segment of the southbound frontage road from Meadowlawn Rd. to Hilltop will be permanently converted to one way. This closure is expected to last for 12-18 months, and completion of the reconstruction is anticipated in late 2013 or early 2014. Crossings at FM 308 to the south and Ross Rd. to the north will be open.
  • The exit and entrance ramps to/from Wiggins will be closed until the new northbound mainlanes are completed.
Milestones
  • The new temporary exit ramp for northbound FM 1858/Tokio Rd. is open.
  • The major striping work on section of BUS 77/Old Dallas Rd. is complete.
  • Began work on the northbound mainlanes between Tours Rd. and FM 1858, including the bridge embankment for the new Wiggins Rd. bridge.
Down the Road
  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road between Ross Rd. and FM 1858/Tokio Rd.
  • Continue work on the southbound frontage road between Ross Rd. and Hilltop St.
  • Continue work on the southbound mainlanes between Hilltop St. and BUS 77.
  • Continue work on retaining walls at FM 1858/Tokio Rd.
  • Complete finish work for striping on section of BUS 77/Old Dallas Rd.
  • Finish illumination under the Crest, Craven, and Meyers bridges.
  • Work on the FM 1858 intersection to prepare for switching traffic to the new bridge and demolishing the old.
  • Remove the old bridge at Wiggins Rd.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)

Lane closures
  • The southbound exit ramp to County Line Rd. has been closed and a temporary ramp opened. Traffic on the southbound frontage road will be detoured around the existing County Line Rd. crossing until the new frontage road is built, possibly as late as summer 2013.
Milestones
  • Began forming the bridge deck for the County Line Rd. overpass.
  • Began removing the old northbound frontage road and preparing for the new northbound mainlanes.
  • Began setting retaining wall mural panels on the west side at FM 2114/Oak St.
  • Completed the bridge deck for the FM 1242 overpass.
  • Began the new frontage roads from FM 1242 northward to connect to the new frontage roads in the Section 5C project.
  • Began removing the old northbound frontage road and preparing for the new northbound mainlanes.
  • Began concrete pavement at the County Line Rd. and HCR 3102 intersections.
  • Completed the new southbound frontage road from County Line Rd. to FM 2114 and moved traffic onto new pavement, converting frontage road to one way.
Down the Road
  • Continue work on the southbound frontage roads and the northbound intersection at FM 1242.
  • Continue paving the west side of the Marable St. intersections.
  • Complete the bridge deck for the County Line Rd. overpass.
  • Begin concrete pavement for the southbound frontage road from FM 2114 to the south end of the project.
  • Continue preparing for the new northbound mainlanes.
  • Continue pouring concrete pavement at the County Line Rd. and HCR 3102 intersections.
  • Begin laying asphalt for the new northbound frontage roads from FM 1242 northward and connect to the new frontage roads in the Section 5C project.
  • Continue building the new southbound main lanes on the southwest corner of the FM 2114 overpass.
  • Complete retaining wall murals at southwest corner of FM 2114/Oak St.
  • Grading and base work for the new northbound mainlanes between County Line Rd. and FM 1242.
  • Pour concrete pavement for the center mainlanes from just north of FM 1242 to the north end of the project.

Section 5C: ABBOTT TO SOUTH OF HILLSBORO (FM 1304 TO FM 310)

  • Began seeding landscape areas.
