It's About Brine: Keeping Ice off the Roads

The Waco District has a new line of defense in the fight against icy roadways—and it could save the district a lot of money. In addition to the sand and crushed-rock mixture — called ice chat — that provides traction once ice has formed, the Waco District has begun supplementing that tried-and-true method with a new pre-treatment process, potentially safer than other, current pre-treatment solutions to help prevent ice forming in the first place. | Read More

TTI, TxDOT Team Up to Test Connected Vehicle Technology

Connected vehicles are coming. The transportation industry is already working on standards and prototypes. And part of developing those is testing both to ensure the future of transportation is as safe, efficient and reliable as possible. Construction updates

Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

Milestones
  • Completed cleanup of the old FM 2484 bridge.
Down the Road
  • Continue construction on the second half of the FM 2484 bridge.
  • Continue reconstructing the FM 2268 retaining wall.
  • Continue constructing southbound mainlanes from the south end of the project through Thomas Arnold.
  • Continue construction of the retaining walls at FM 2484.
  • Continue construction of the retaining walls between Salado Creek and Thomas Arnold along the mainlanes.
  • Continue construction of the northbound frontage road from North Main St. to FM 2484.
  • Continue construction of the southbound frontage road on each side of FM 2484.
  • Complete the retaining wall reconstruction and open FM 2268.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

  • Began installation of the signals at Loop 121 and FM 436/US 190 at the frontage roads.

  • Continue constructing the southbound mainlanes and culverts from FM 2484 to Loop 121.

  • Continue constructing the ramp from the northbound mainlanes to the US 190 direct connect/flyover.
  • Continue the intersection signal installation FM 436/US 190 and frontage roads.

Section 2B: TEMPLE (S. LOOP 363 TO N. LOOP 363)

  • Began erecting Retaining Wall on the west side of the new 290 Spur Bridges.
  • Began installing temporary detour south of Nugent Avenue to prepare for work on the southbound mainlane and frontage road overpasses at BNSF Belco Yard.
Down the Road
  • Continue constructing the on- and off-ramps for southbound I-35 between Midway Dr. and Loop 363.
  • Continue installing culverts north of S. Loop 363 across the northbound frontage road, off ramp, and mainlanes.
  • Continue constructing the storm sewer on the southbound and northbound frontage roads north of Nugent.
  • Continue building the bridge abutments and interior columns at Spur 290.
  • Continue the concrete paving on Spur 290.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road bridges at BNSF Railroad's Belco and Lampas-Sub lines.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

lane closures
  • Until further notice, the southbound frontage road will be closed from Roberts Cemetery to Big Elm Rd. This will allow the demolition and rebuilding of the new frontage road and bridge over Big Elm Creek. Frontage-road traffic traveling south from Big Elm Rd. will have to enter the freeway, except for local traffic only, south of Big Elm Creek. A temporary turnaround has been constructed near Roberts Cemetery.
Down the Road
  • Begin switching to the new southbound mainlane pavement between Big Elm Rd. and FM 107 in the next 4-6 weeks.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road from Big Elm Creek to Big Elm Rd.
  • Continue construction of the new I-35 overpass at Old Blevins Rd.
  • Continue constructing the new southbound mainlane from Big Elm Rd. to Old Blevins Rd.
  • Continue working on the new Union Pacific Railroad bridges.
  • Continue constructing the retaining wall at the new turnaround north of the railroad tracks in Bruceville-Eddy.
  • Continue constructing a retaining wall at the northbound frontage-road bridge.
  • Continue working on the southbound frontage road from UPRR to FM 107.
  • Continue working on the northbound mainlanes from FM 107 to UPRR.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

Down the Road
  • Complete the South Cow Bayou bridge for the main lanes.
  • Switch the northbound traffic to new pavement under FM 1695/FM 3148.
  • Continue the shift of the southbound frontage road traffic at North Cow Bayou to the new bridge.
  • Switch the southbound mainlane traffic to new pavement from FM 2063/Sun Valley Blvd. to FM 1695/Moonlight Dr.

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

  • Continue installing the lighting systems.
  • Install sidewalks and landscaping along the river.
  • Overall job completion and clean up.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

Lane Closures
  • Main St. in Elm Mott is permanently closed to through traffic at the southbound frontage road.
Milestones
  • Closed the FM 308 crossing for 2 weeks starting Monday February 9 to pave critical areas in this intersection.
Down the Road
  • Continue construction of the retaining walls adjacent to the northbound frontage road at FM 308 in Elm Mott.
  • Complete the southbound mainlane pavement.
  • Open the third northbound and southbound mainlanes from FM 3149/Tours Rd. to FM 1858/Tokio Rd.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)

Lane closures
  • The southbound exit 354 (the Marable St. exit) will remain closed during the construction of this portion of the southbound frontage road until a new exit is built. A message sign will notify the traveling public of the closure.
  • The northbound Marable St. exit is closed and will remain closed until the new ramp can be built (after the new northbound frontage road is built).
Milestones
  • Completed pouring concrete for the new southbound mainlanes.
  • Finished placing stone for the pilasters on the retaining walls and began work on the FM 1242 planter boxes.
  • Closed the FM 2114 underpass.
  • Opened the new northbound entrance ramps for FM 1858/Tokio Rd.
  • Completed installation of project lighting.
  • Began work on the FM 2114 roadway and the FM 1242 roadway under I-35.
Down the Road
  • Complete moving of northbound side barrier wall, re-striping of mainlanes and opening new third northbound mainlane throughout project.
  • Continue building the new northbound frontage road through West from the beginning of the project to Marable St., including driveways, intersections, and U-turn lanes under FM 2114.
  • Complete pouring concrete for the new southbound mainlanes.
  • Continue painting the retaining walls throughout the project.
  • Continue work on the FM 2114 roadway and the FM 1242 roadway under I-35.
  • Place the final overlay and pavement markings on the frontage roads.
  • Complete installation of the final signage along the highway.
