Fourteen Bridges Road: Section 5-A Crew Celebrates Completion of Construction with Topping-Out Ceremony

When Bruce Johnson became TxDOT's project manager for Section 5-A of the I-35 Expansion Project two years ago, he knew there would be major challenges ahead of him. After all, 14 bridges along the 13.5-mile construction zone were being replaced — from N. Loop 340 in Waco to FM 1858 south of West. It's Nearly Spring, So Time to Get Ready for Winter

For TxDOT's Rick Swinson, increasing the safety of winter travel by improving traction on the road — or, hopefully, by eliminating ice before it forms — is a year-round job that primarily begins in the spring. Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

Milestones
  • Completed cleanup of the old FM 2484 bridge.
  • Switched the southbound frontage road to one-way from Main Street.
  • Completed reconstructing the FM 2268 retaining wall and opened it to traffic.
Down the Road
  • Continue constructing southbound mainlanes from the south end of the project through Thomas Arnold.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls at FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls between Salado Creek and Thomas Arnold along the mainlanes.
  • Continue constructing the northbound frontage road from North Main St. to FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road on each side of FM 2484.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

  • Continue constructing the southbound mainlanes and culverts from FM 2484 to Loop 121.
  • Continue the intersection construction at Loop 121 and the frontage roads.
  • Continue constructing the US 190 direct connect/flyover.
  • Continue constructing the ramp from the northbound mainlanes to the US 190 direct connect/flyover.
  • Continue the intersection signal installation FM 436/US 190 and frontage roads.

Section 2B: TEMPLE (S. LOOP 363 TO N. LOOP 363)

  • Continue constructing the on- and off-ramps for southbound I-35 between Midway Dr. and Loop 363.
  • Continue installing culverts north of S. Loop 363 across the northbound frontage road, off ramp, and mainlanes.
  • Continue constructing the storm sewer on the southbound and northbound frontage roads north of Nugent.
  • Continue building the bridge abutments and interior columns at Spur 290.
  • Continue the concrete paving on Spur 290.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road bridges at BNSF Railroad’s Belco and Lampas-Sub lines.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

  • Continue work on the direct connect from southbound frontage road to westbound Loop 363.
  • Completed installation of retaining walls for the South Troy underpass along the northbound frontage road.
  • Began working on sidewalk, railing, and the pavement in the area on top of the walls at the South Troy underpass.

  • Continue work on the northbound frontage road between Loop 363 and Berger/Hart Rd.
  • Begin work on Little Elm Bridge on the northbound frontage road.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

lane closures
  • Until further notice, the southbound frontage road will be closed from Roberts Cemetery to Big Elm Rd. This will allow the demolition and rebuilding of the new frontage road and bridge over Big Elm Creek. Frontage-road traffic traveling south from Big Elm Rd. will have to enter the freeway, except for local traffic only, south of Big Elm Creek. A temporary turnaround has been constructed near Roberts Cemetery.
Milestones
  • Completed construction of the new I-35 overpass at Old Blevins Rd.
Down the Road
  • Begin switching to the new southbound mainlane pavement between Big Elm Rd. and FM 107 in the next 4-6 weeks.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road from Big Elm Creek to Big Elm Rd.
  • Continue construction of the new I-35 overpass at Old Blevins Rd.
  • Continue constructing the new southbound mainlane from Big Elm Rd. to Old Blevins Rd.
  • Continue working on the new Union Pacific Railroad bridges.
  • Continue constructing the retaining wall at the new turnaround north of the railroad tracks in Bruceville-Eddy.
  • Continue constructing a retaining wall at the northbound frontage-road bridge.
  • Continue working on the southbound frontage road from UPRR to FM 107.
  • Continue working on the northbound mainlanes from FM 107 to UPRR.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

Milestones
  • Switched the southbound mainlane traffic to new pavement from FM 2063/Sun Valley Blvd. to FM 1695/Moonlight Dr.
  • Switched the northbound traffic to new pavement under FM 1695/FM 3148.
  • Completed the South Cow Bayou bridge for the main lanes.
Down the Road
  • Continue constructing the northbound and southbound mainlane bridges over North Cow Bayou.

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

  • Continue installing the lighting systems.
  • Install sidewalks and landscaping along the river.
  • Overall job completion and clean up.

Section 4A: WACO ACCESS ROADS (MLK TO TAYLOR)

Lane Closures
  • North-to-south access roads and the turnaround from MLK Blvd. under I-35 at the UPRR crossing have been permanently closed. New access roads and railroad crossing bridges will be constructed to replace them.
Milestones
  • Set the barrier and signs for start-up of construction of new access roads and railroad crossing bridges from MLK Blvd. to Taylor St. north of the Forrest St. crossing.
Down the Road
  • Move/replace traffic signal at MLK on northbound access road.
  • Continue excavating and installing new box culverts.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

Lane Closures
  • Main St. in Elm Mott is permanently closed to through traffic at the southbound frontage road.
Milestones
  • Poured the last bridge deck.
Down the Road
  • Continue construction of the retaining walls adjacent to the northbound frontage road at FM 308 in Elm Mott.
  • Complete the southbound mainlane pavement.
  • Open the third northbound and southbound mainlanes from FM 3149/Tours Rd. to FM 1858/Tokio Rd.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)

Lane closures
  • The southbound exit 354 (the Marable St. exit) will remain closed during the construction of this portion of the southbound frontage road until a new exit is built. A message sign will notify the traveling public of the closure.
  • The northbound Marable St. exit is closed and will remain closed until the new ramp can be built (after the new northbound frontage road is built).
Milestones
  • Completed moving the northbound side barrier wall and the re-striping of new mainlanes.
  • Completed pouring concrete for the new southbound mainlanes.
  • Completed painting the retaining walls throughout the project.
  • Opened new third northbound mainlane throughout the project.
Down the Road
  • Continue building the new northbound frontage road through West from the beginning of the project to Marable St., including driveways, intersections, and U-turn lanes under FM 2114.
  • Continue work on the FM 2114 roadway and the FM 1242 roadway under I-35.
  • Place the final overlay and pavement markings on the frontage roads.
  • Complete installation of the final signage along the highway.
  • Begin placing landscaping block, sidewalks and ADA ramps at the FM 2114 intersection.
  • Open the new southbound County Line Road exit #355.
  • Open the new southbound Marable St. exit #354.
