BRIDGE LIGHTS HELP UNITE COMMUNITY, STRENGTHEN WACO-BAYLOR-TXDOT PARTNERSHIP

In a historic symbol of unity, representatives from TxDOT, the city of Waco and Baylor University helped flip the switch on the lighting system for the two signature Brazos River bridges on Tuesday, June 2. The bridge lighting ceremony was attended by hundreds of residents who celebrated with audible oohs and ahhs when the first lights were turned on, revealing magnificent green and gold bridges that lit up Waco's skyline. |Read More

THE CZECH MURALS OF WEST: RICH IN HERITAGE, SYMBOLS OF OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

I-35 motorists who take Exit #353 at West are now greeted with two of three completed murals depicting the area's Czech heritage. The images of dancers and polka-band musicians adorning the retaining walls of the highway overpass at FM 2114 are eye-catching and memorable, but for the residents of West—who endured a deadly fertilizer plant explosion in 2013 that rocked their small community—the murals symbolize deeply personal and heartwarming stories of dedication, heartache, and perseverance. |Read More

Construction updates

Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

Lane Closures
  • The old southbound access road is closed permanently from Thomas Arnold Rd (exit #284) to FM 2268 (exit #283), due to extensive flood damage at Salado Creek during the May storms. Traffic needing to access the FM 2268/Holland Rd. bridge will cross to the northbound side and turn right on the access road (changed temporarily to two-way) to FM 2268 and turn right to cross back over to the southbound side. This detour will remain in effect until the new southbound access road is constructed over the creek.
Milestones
  • Removed the last portion of the old Salado Creek mainlane bridge.
Down the Road
  • Begin constructing northbound mainlane north of Main St. to the end of the project.
  • Move traffic to the new northbound frontage-road pavement from North Main St. to FM 2484.
  • Complete the FM 2268 southbound exit ramp.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls at FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls between Salado Creek and Thomas Arnold along the mainlanes.
  • Complete constructing the northbound frontage road from North Main St. to FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road north and south of FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the final southbound mainlane segment from Thomas Arnold south to the end of the project.
  • Begin constructing the new Salado Creek mainlane bridge segment.
  • Begin to seed and sod along the frontage roads.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

  • Completed the northbound frontage-road driveway connections.
Down the road
  • Continue constructing the southbound mainlanes and culverts from FM 2484 to Loop 121.
  • Continue the intersection construction at Loop 121 and the frontage roads.
  • Continue constructing the US 190 direct connect/flyover.
  • Continue constructing the ramp from the northbound mainlanes to the US 190 direct connect/flyover.
  • Continue installation of traffic signals at the intersection of FM 436/US 190 and the frontage roads.
  • Continue installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Loop 121 and I-35.
  • Complete the signal work and have the signals operational.
  • Continue to sod along the northbound mainlanes and frontage road.

SECTION 2B: TEMPLE (S. LOOP 363 TO N. LOOP 363)

  • Opened new southbound on-ramp to I-35 S.
  • New on-ramp opened just south of S. Loop 363.
Down the Road
  • Set new barriers on southbound mainlanes and frontage road between Midway Dr. and Loop 363 to facilitate construction of the new off-ramp and Charter Oaks intersection.
  • Continue installing culverts north of S. Loop 363 across the northbound frontage road, off ramp, and mainlanes.
  • Continue constructing the storm sewer on the southbound and northbound frontage roads north of Nugent throughout the project.
  • Continue building the bridge abutments and interior columns at Spur 290.
  • Continue the concrete paving on Spur 290.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road bridges at BNSF Railroad's Belco and Lampas-Sub lines.
  • Continue constructing retaining wall on the northbound frontage road by Carpenter's and the BNSF Railroad underpass.
  • Continue constructing retaining wall on the southbound frontage road at Spur 290 underpass.
  • Continue constructing retaining walls on the southbound frontage road at the BNSF Railroad overpass.
  • Move northbound mainlane traffic to Detour 64 by the end of the month to facilitate construction of the eastern span for the Spur 290 underpass and turnarounds.
  • Complete installation of shoring on the western end of the BNSF Railroad underpass to facilitate installation of the BNSF Railroad underpass sho-fly structure.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

  • Finished abutments and caps on the Little Elm Bridge northbound frontage road.
  • Completed construction of the box culvert across Berger Rd.
  • Completed all culverts along the southbound frontage road at Berger/Hart Rd.
Down the Road
  • Continue installing permanent signs on the new southbound frontage road.
  • Begin concrete paving on the northbound frontage road between Loop 363 and Berger/Hart Rd.
  • Finish work on driveways along the southbound frontage road.
  • Continue installing riprap along the southbound frontage-road ditches.
  • Continue work on the Little Elm Creek southbound frontage-road bridge rail.
  • Continue placing hot mix on the southbound frontage road between Berger Rd. and Loop 363.
  • Begin placing concrete paving on the southbound frontage road between Berger Rd. and Loop 363.
  • Finish concrete paving on the southbound frontage road to the north end of the project.
  • Continue working on the northbound frontage road between Berger/Hart Rd. and FM 1237.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

lane closures
  • Until further notice, the southbound frontage road will be closed from Roberts Cemetery to Big Elm Rd. This will allow the demolition and rebuilding of the new frontage road and bridge over Big Elm Creek. Frontage-road traffic traveling south from Big Elm Rd. will have to enter the freeway, except for local traffic only, south of Big Elm Creek. A temporary turnaround has been constructed near Roberts Cemetery.
Down the Road
  • Begin concrete paving on the southbound frontage road from Big Elm Creek to Big Elm Rd.
  • Begin pouring bridge deck on the new Union Pacific Railroad bridges.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road from Big Elm Creek to Big Elm Rd.
  • Continue working on the new Union Pacific Railroad bridges.
  • Continue constructing a retaining wall at the northbound frontage-road bridge.
  • Begin concrete paving on the southbound frontage road from UPRR to FM 107.
  • Continue working on the northbound mainlanes from FM 107 to UPRR.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

Down the Road
  • Continue laying asphalt paving on the northbound frontage road from Bruceville-Eddy to S. FM 2837.
  • Demo the existing southbound mainlane bridge over Woodlawn Rd.
  • Continue construction of the southbound frontage road from S. FM 2837 to Bruceville-Eddy.
  • Switch southbound traffic on to new pavement from W. FM 2837 to E. FM 2837 in Lorena.
  • Continue construction of the southbound frontage road from Sun Valley Blvd. to Moonlight Dr.
  • Demolish North and South Cow bridges on the old southbound mainlanes.
  • Begin excavation for the Telephone Rd. bridge so construction can begin on the remaining half of the bridge.

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

  • Install sidewalks and landscaping along the river.
  • Overall job completion and clean up.

Section 4A: WACO ACCESS ROADS (MLK TO TAYLOR)

Lane Closures
  • North-to-south access roads and the turnaround from MLK Blvd. under I-35 at the UPRR crossing have been permanently closed. New access roads and railroad crossing bridges will be constructed to replace them.
  • The southbound exit ramp #335C to MLK Blvd. has been closed to install new drainage structures underneath.
Milestones
  • Closed thesouthbound exit ramp #335C to MLK Blvd. to install new drainage structures underneath.
Down the Road
  • Continue excavating and installing new box culverts on both sides of the highway.
  • Continue installing new drainage structures at MLK.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

Lane Closures
  • Main St. in Elm Mott is permanently closed to through traffic at the southbound frontage road.
Milestones
  • All six mainlanes are now in their final configuration.
Down the Road
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls adjacent to the northbound frontage road at FM 308 in Elm Mott.
  • Complete construction of the northbound frontage road and the FM 308 intersection in Elm Mott.
  • Working on opening the third northbound mainlane by mid-June.
  • Finish installation of traffic features: signs, traffic signals at FM 308, and illumination.
  • Complete the final paving for the southbound frontage road from Hilltop Rd. to Wiggins Rd. and the northbound frontage road from Hilltop Rd. to FM 1858/Tokio Rd.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)

Milestones
  • Completed the new northbound frontage road through West from the beginning of the project to Marable St., including driveways, intersections, and U-turn lanes under FM 2114.
Down the Road
  • Complete project lighting.
  • Install traffic signals.
  • Begin seeding and landscaping.
  • Install driveways.
  • Conduct pavement repair at various locations.
  • Continue placing landscaping block, sidewalks and ADA ramps at the FM 2114 intersection.
