TxDOT Opens Mainlanes for My35's Section 5A (Waco to West: N. Loop 340 to FM 1858)

Working first through one of the worst droughts in state history—and then, in May, Central Texas flooding of epic proportions—the construction crew for Section 5A (from Waco to West) of the I-35 Expansion Project is finally getting to celebrate. Construction updates

Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

lane closures
  • The old southbound access road is closed permanently from Thomas Arnold Rd (exit #284) to FM 2268 (exit #283), due to extensive flood damage at Salado Creek during the May storms. Traffic needing to access the FM 2268/Holland Rd. bridge will cross to the northbound side and turn right on the access road (changed temporarily to two-way) to FM 2268 and turn right to cross back over to the southbound side. This detour will remain in effect until the new southbound access road is constructed over the creek.
Milestones
  • Began constructing the northbound mainlane north of Main St. to the end of the project.
  • Began constructing the new Salado Creek mainlane bridge segment.
  • Began to seed and sod along the frontage roads.
Down the Road
  • Continue constructing the northbound mainlane north of Main St. to the end of the project.
  • Move traffic to the new northbound frontage-road pavement from North Main St. to FM 2484.
  • Complete the FM 2268 southbound exit ramp.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls at FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls between Salado Creek and Thomas Arnold along the mainlanes.
  • Complete constructing the northbound frontage road from North Main St. to FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road north and south of FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the final southbound mainlane segment from Thomas Arnold south to the end of the project.
  • Continue constructing the new Salado Creek mainlane bridge segment.
  • Continue to seed and sod along the frontage roads.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

  • Continue constructing the southbound mainlanes and culverts from FM 2484 to Loop 121.
  • Continue the intersection construction at Loop 121 and the frontage roads.
  • Continue constructing the US 190 direct connect/flyover.
  • Continue constructing the ramp from the northbound mainlanes to the US 190 direct connect/flyover.
  • Continue installation of traffic signals at the intersection of FM 436/US 190 and the frontage roads.
  • Continue installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Loop 121 and I-35.
  • Complete the signal work and have the signals operational.
  • Continue to sod along the northbound mainlanes and frontage road.

SECTION 2B: TEMPLE (S. LOOP 363 TO N. LOOP 363)

  • New southbound on-ramp was opened by Charter Oaks, the old on-ramp closed.
  • Moved northbound mainlane traffic onto temporary pavement near Spur 290/Industrial Blvd.
    Completed shoring of the western end of the BNSF Railroad Underpass.

  • Begin constructing new off-ramp south of Loop 363.
  • Continue installing culverts north of S. Loop 363 across the northbound frontage road, off ramp, and mainlanes.
  • Continue constructing the storm sewer on the southbound and northbound frontage roads north of Nugent throughout the project.
  • Continue building the bridge abutments and interior columns at Spur 290.
  • Continue the concrete paving on Spur 290.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road bridges at BNSF Railroad's Belco and Lampas-Sub lines.
  • Continue constructing retaining wall on the northbound frontage road by Carpenter's and the BNSF Railroad underpass.
  • Continue constructing retaining wall on the southbound frontage road at Spur 290 underpass.
  • Continue constructing retaining walls on the southbound frontage road at the BNSF Railroad overpass.
  • Begin constructing the embankment header for the east side of the 290 Spur underpass to support the construction of the final abutment number 3 for the structure.
  • Begin setting beams on the southbound frontage-road overpass at the BNSF Lampasas-Sub Bridge.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

  • Finished paving the northbound frontage road between Loop 363 and Berger/Hart Rd.
  • Finished paving the southbound frontage road between Berger Rd. and Loop 363.
  • Finished paving the southbound frontage road to the north end of the project.

  • Continue installing permanent signs on the new southbound frontage road.
  • Finish work on driveways along the southbound frontage road.
  • Continue installing riprap along the southbound frontage-road ditches.
  • Continue work on the Little Elm Creek southbound frontage-road bridge rail.
  • Continue placing hot mix on the southbound frontage road between Berger Rd. and Loop 363.
  • Continue working on the northbound frontage road between Berger/Hart Rd. and FM 1237.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

lane closures
  • Until further notice, the southbound frontage road will be closed from Roberts Cemetery to Big Elm Rd. This will allow the demolition and rebuilding of the new frontage road and bridge over Big Elm Creek. Frontage-road traffic traveling south from Big Elm Rd. will have to enter the freeway, except for local traffic only, south of Big Elm Creek. A temporary turnaround has been constructed near Roberts Cemetery.
MILESTONES
  • Finished pouring the bridge deck on the new Union Pacific Railroad bridges.
Down the Road
  • Finish concrete paving on the southbound frontage road from Big Elm Creek to Big Elm Rd.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road from Big Elm Creek to Big Elm Rd.
  • Continue working on the new Union Pacific Railroad bridges.
  • Continue constructing a retaining wall at the northbound frontage-road bridge.
  • Begin concrete paving on the southbound frontage road from UPRR to FM 107.
  • Continue working on the northbound mainlanes from FM 107 to UPRR.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

MILESTONES
  • Completed demolition of the existing southbound main lane bridge over Woodlawn Rd.
  • Switched southbound traffic onto new pavement from W. FM 2837 to E. FM 2837 in Lorena.
Down the Road
  • Continue construction of the southbound frontage road from S. FM 2837 to Bruceville-Eddy.
  • Begin paving the southbound frontage road from Sun Valley Blvd. to Moonlight Dr.
  • Begin constructing new on- and off-ramps from Sun Valley Blvd. to Moonlight Dr.
  • Begin switching traffic onto the new bridges and demo North and South Cow Bayou bridges on the old southbound frontage roads.
  • Continue excavation for the Telephone Rd. bridges so construction can begin on the remaining half of the bridge.

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

Down the Road
  • Continue installing underpass lighting.
  • Begin landscaping along the river.
  • Overall job completion and clean up.

Section 4A: WACO ACCESS ROADS (MLK TO TAYLOR)

Lane Closures
  • North-to-south access roads and the turnaround from MLK Blvd. under I-35 at the UPRR crossing have been permanently closed. New access roads and railroad crossing bridges will be constructed to replace them.
  • The southbound frontage road turn around between Forrest St. and UPRR has been closed permanently at Cherry St.
Down the Road
  • Continue excavating and installing new box culverts on both sides of the highway.
  • Continue installing new drainage structures at MLK.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

Lane Closures
  • Main St. in Elm Mott is permanently closed to through traffic at the southbound frontage road.
Milestones
  • All northbound main lanes are now open.
  • Constructed the retaining walls adjacent to the northbound frontage road at FM 308 in Elm Mott.
Down the Road
  • Complete constructing the northbound frontage road and the FM 308 intersection in Elm Mott.
  • Continue installing traffic features: signs, traffic signals at FM 308, and illumination.
  • Complete the final paving for the southbound frontage road from Hilltop Rd. to Wiggins Rd. and the northbound frontage road from Hilltop Rd. to FM 1858/Tokio Rd.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)

  • Completed driveway installation.
  • Finished placing landscaping block, sidewalks and ADA ramps at the FM 2114 intersection.
Down the Road
  • Complete project lighting.
  • Continue installing traffic signals.

  • Work on punch list.
