"Recalculating!" GPS Alternate Routes Not Always the Best Choice

Reinforced Earth Company Makes I-35 Communities Safer, More Beautiful

It's a big business — vital for roadway construction and the safety of motorists. But chances are you don't know much about what's called mechanically stabilized earth (MSE). Construction updates

Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

Lane Closures
  • The old southbound access road is closed permanently from Thomas Arnold Rd. (exit #284) to FM 2268 (exit #283), due to extensive flood damage at Salado Creek during the May storms. Traffic needing to access the FM 2268/Holland Rd. bridge will cross to the northbound side and turn right on the access road (changed temporarily to two-way) to FM 2268 and turn right to cross back over to the southbound side. This detour will remain in effect until the new southbound access road is constructed over the creek.
Milestones
  • Completed demolition of the old mainlane bridges at Main Street.
  • Completed pouring the final section of the FM 2484 bridge deck.
Down the Road
  • Begin constructing new mainlanes, overpasses and ramps at Salado Parkway.
  • Begin constructing new approach slabs and connections to frontage roads at FM 2484.
  • Complete the last phase of the FM 2484 Bridge.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls and traffic barrier at FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls along the mainlanes between Salado Creek and Thomas Arnold.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road north and south of FM 2484.
  • Complete construction of the new southbound frontage road and Salado Creek Frontage Road Bridge from Thomas Arnold to FM 2268.
  • Continue to seed and sod along the mainlanes and frontage roads.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

Down the road

  • Complete new on- and off-ramps on southbound access road between Loop 121 and Shanklin Rd.
  • Continue constructing the southbound mainlanes and culverts from FM 2484 to Loop 121.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road from Loop 121 to FM 2484.
  • Activate the traffic signals at the I-35 frontage roads at Loop 121.
  • Continue paving mainlanes from US 190 to Central Ave.
  • Continue High Mast illumination construction at the I-35/US 190 interchange.
  • Continue constructing the US 190 direct connect/flyover.
  • Activate the traffic signals at the intersection of FM 436/US 190 and the frontage roads.
  • Continue to sod along the northbound mainlanes and frontage road.

Section 2B: TEMPLE (S. LOOP 363 TO N. LOOP 363)

LANE CLOSURES
  • Southbound exit ramp #302 (Nugent Ave.) is closed indefinitely as work on mainlanes and access road continues in this area.
Milestones
  • Finished constructing the southbound frontage road bridges at BNSF Railroad's Belco and Lampas-Sub lines.
  • Finished grading and installing PC panels and overhang jacks on the southbound frontage-road BNSF Lampas-Sub Overpass.
  • Installed bridge deck on the southbound frontage road BNSF Lampas-Sub Overpass.
Down the Road
  • Begin setting beams at the southbound frontage road and mainlane overpass structures at the BNSF Belco Yard.
  • Begin construction on the retaining wall on the west side of I-35 mainlanes in the Nugent area.
  • Continue constructing the new off-ramp south of Loop 363.
  • Continue installing culverts north of S. Loop 363 across the southbound frontage road, off ramp, and mainlanes.
  • Continue constructing the storm sewer on the southbound and northbound frontage roads north of Nugent throughout the project.
  • Continue constructing the eastern abutments at Spur 290 Underpass.
  • Continue constructing the retaining wall on the southbound frontage road at Spur 290 underpass.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls on the southbound frontage road at the BNSF Railroad overpass.
  • Continue constructing the embankment header for the east side of Spur 290.
  • Install bridge rail and deck grooving on the southbound frontage road BNSF Lampas-Sub Overpass upcoming to complete structure.
  • PCP panels are being installed on the southbound frontage road BNSF Belco Yard Overpass in preparation for the bridge deck installation.
  • Phase II installation of Culvert 1 is complete. Mainlane traffic will be returned to its original position after the New Year and Phase III installation will begin.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

  • Completed pouring the caps on the southbound mainlanes on the N. Troy Bridge.
  • Completed pouring columns on current section of the S. Troy Bridge.
  • Began subgrade work for the southbound mainlanes from Berger/Hart Rd. to the end of the project.
Down the Road
  • Begin setting beams for the southbound mainlanes at North Troy.
  • Begin setting beams for the South Troy Underpass.
  • Begin concrete paving on the southbound mainlanes.
  • Continue subgrade work for the southbound mainlanes from Berger/Hart Rd. to the end of the project.
  • Switch traffic onto the new northbound frontage road pavement from Loop 363 and Berger/Hart Rd.
  • Continue pouring the concrete pavement on the northbound frontage road between Berger/Hart Rd. and FM 1237.
  • Complete work on Church Ave. and begin working on driveways.
  • Complete pavement section on the northbound frontage road between FM 1237 and FM 935.
  • Begin concrete paving from Lely Dr. to Austin Ave.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

  • Opened northbound frontage-road bridge to frontage-road traffic.
  • Began constructing the new northbound mainlane bridge at Deer Creek, completed drill shafts.

  • Continue working on the new UPRR bridges. Shift mainlane traffic onto frontage-road bridge early next year.
  • Continue constructing a retaining wall at the northbound frontage-road bridge.
  • Continue concrete paving on the southbound frontage road from UPRR to FM 107.
  • Begin concrete paving on new northbound mainlane from Big Elm Rd. to Blevins.
  • Begin abutments for the new northbound mainlane bridge at Deer Creek.
  • Set beams for the new northbound mainlane bridge at Deer Creek.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

  • Completed pouring the bridge deck for the remaining half of the new Callan Ranch Rd. bridges.
  • Completed and opened the new southbound on-ramp in Lorena.
  • Completed constructing the permanent barrier wall between the northbound mainlanes and southbound mainlanes from Sun Valley to Bullhide Creek.
  • Began constructing the retaining wall for the Callan Ranch Rd. bridge.
  • Completed and switched traffic onto the new southbound mainlanes through Lorena.
  • Began constructing the southbound mainlane from Woodlawn to the south end of the job (near UPRR crossing).
Down the Road
  • Pave approaches and build median islands for Callan Ranch Rd. bridges.
  • Finish constructing the southbound frontage-road bridge at South Cow Bayou.
  • Finish constructing the south-to-north turnaround bridge at W. FM 2837.
  • Continue installation of highway illumination.
  • Complete constructing the retaining wall for the Callan Ranch Rd. bridge.
  • Continue constructing the southbound mainlane from Woodlawn to south end of the job (near UPRR crossing).

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

  • Began installation of the pedestrian fence on top of the retaining walls.
  • Began reviewing handrail submittals for fabrication.
  • Began lighted glass gabion work.
Down the Road
  • Continue installation of the railing along the new sidewalk areas under the bridge.
  • Complete reviewing handrail submittals for fabrication.
  • Continue work on lighted glass gabions.
  • Continue landscaping along the river.
  • Overall job completion and clean up.

SECTION 4A: WACO ACCESS ROADS (MLK TO TAYLOR)

LANE CLOSURES
  • North-to-south access roads and the turnaround from MLK Blvd. under I-35 at the UPRR crossing have been permanently closed. New access roads and railroad crossing bridges will be constructed to replace them.
  • The southbound frontage road turnaround between Forrest St. and UPRR has been closed permanently at Cherry St.
MILESTONES
  • Completed installation of the traffic signal at the northeast corner of the northbound frontage road and MLK.
  • Completed installation of drilled shafts for both UPRR frontage road bridges south of UPRR.
  • Finished installing drainage south of UPRR.
Down the Road
  • Continue installing drainage north of UPRR.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls on the southbound and northbound frontage road abutments for the new UPRR bridges.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

  • Finished getting the last two dynamic message signs operational south of Ross Road.
Down the Road
  • Continue installing illumination.
  • Connect electric service to power feed.
