Truck Lane Restrictions Planned for Waco District Work Zones

Truck traffic on I-35 in the Waco District may be restricted to just one lane in work zones beginning this summer as I-35 becomes the first location in the state to act upon new legislation to improve work zone safety. Public Comment Sought on Contract Management Rule Change Request

On Thursday, January 28, 2016, the Texas Transportation Commissioners voted to request some changes to the Texas Administrative Code to give TxDOT some additional tools to use when contractors are chronically late on delivery of projects. Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

  • Opened the first lane of new southbound access road from Thomas Arnold to FM 2268.
  • Re-converted the northbound access road to one-way travel.
  • Began construction of the retaining-wall murals at new Salado Plaza Dr. intersection.
  • Began constructing the new mainlanes, overpasses, and ramps at Salado Parkway.
  • Began constructing the new approach slabs and connections to the frontage roads at FM 2484.
  • Completed the last phase of the FM 2484 bridge.
Down the Road
  • Continue constructing new mainlanes, retaining walls overpasses and ramps at Salado Parkway.
  • Begin constructing the approach roadway of Main Street to I-35.
  • Continue constructing new approach slabs and connections to frontage roads at FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls and traffic barrier at FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls along the mainlanes between Salado Creek and Thomas Arnold.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road north and south of FM 2484.

Section 2B: TEMPLE (S. LOOP 363 TO N. LOOP 363)

  • Southbound exit ramp #302 (Nugent Ave.) is closed indefinitely as work on mainlanes and access road continues in this area.
Milestones
  • Completed and opened the Charter Oaks intersection.
  • Finished setting the structure at the southbound frontage road and mainlane overpass at the BNSF Belco Yard.
  • Completed culvert 1 installation under the I-35 mainlanes.
  • Completed constructing the eastern abutments at Spur 290 underpass.
  • Installed bridge deck on BNSF Lampas-Sub overpass.
  • Completed PCP panel installation on the southbound frontage road at the BNSF Belco Yard.
Down the Road
  • Begin construction on the retaining wall on the west side of I-35 mainlanes in the Nugent area.
  • Continue constructing the new off-ramp south of Loop 363.
  • Continue constructing the storm sewer on the southbound frontage road from BNSF Lampas-Sub Railroad Overpass south.
  • Begin placing beams on the three Spur 290 structures.
  • Continue constructing the retaining wall on the southbound frontage road at Spur 290 underpass.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls on the southbound frontage road at the BNSF Railroad overpass.
  • Continue constructing the embankment header for the east side of Spur 290.
  • Begin concrete pavement installation at Avenue H.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

  • Completed work on Church Ave. and driveways.

  • Continue concrete paving on the southbound mainlanes.
  • Continue subgrade work for the southbound mainlanes from Berger/Hart Rd. to the end of the project.
  • Continue pouring the concrete pavement on the northbound frontage road between Berger/Hart Rd. and FM 1237.
  • Complete the pavement section on the northbound frontage road between FM 1237 and FM 935.
  • Continue concrete paving from Lely Dr. to Austin Ave.
  • Pour the bridge deck for the southbound mainlanes bridge at North Troy.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

  • Complete construction of the south-to-north turnaround bridge at W. FM 2837.
  • Continue installation of highway illumination.
  • Begin placing brick pavers in median islands in Lorena.
  • Begin hanging permanent cantilevered signs.
  • Finish the southbound frontage road paving, driveways in Hewitt, and on the south end of the project.

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

  • Complete installation of the railing along the new sidewalk areas under the bridge.
  • Complete reviewing handrail submittals for fabrication.
  • Continue work on lighted glass gabions.
  • Continue landscaping along the river.
  • Overall job completion and clean up.

SECTION 4A: WACO ACCESS ROADS (MLK TO TAYLOR)

LANE CLOSURES
  • North-to-south access roads and the turnaround from MLK Blvd. under I-35 at the UPRR crossing have been permanently closed. New access roads and railroad crossing bridges will be constructed to replace them.
  • The southbound frontage road turnaround between Forrest St. and UPRR has been closed permanently at Cherry St.
MILESTONES
  • Re-opened the northbound off-ramp to Forrest St.
Down the Road
  • Continue installing drainage north of UPRR.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls on the southbound and northbound frontage road abutments for the new UPRR bridges.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

Milestones
  • Finished getting the last two dynamic message signs operational south of Ross Rd.
Down the Road
  • Continue installing illumination.
  • Connect electric service to power feed.
  • Work on "punch list" of minor tasks to be completed.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)
