Build It and They Will Come: Monarch Waystations Coming to Waco District Safety Rest Areas

Plans are under way to attract millions of Mexican and Canadian visitors to TxDOT's four safety rest areas in Hill and Bell Counties. Construction updates

Section 1B: SALADO (FM 2843 to FM 2484)

  • Finished setting beams on the Salado Plaza overpass and off-ramp bridge.
Down the Road
  • Continue constructing new mainlanes, retaining walls, overpasses, and ramps at Salado Parkway.
  • Continue constructing the approach roadway of Main Street to I-35.
  • Continue constructing new approach slabs and connections to frontage roads at FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls and traffic barrier at FM 2484.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls along the mainlanes between Salado Creek and Thomas Arnold.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road north and south of FM 2484.
  • Complete construction of the new southbound frontage road and Salado Creek Frontage Road Bridge from Thomas Arnold to FM 2268.
  • Continue placing topsoil and seed along the mainlanes and frontage roads.
  • Completed pouring bridge deck for northbound and southbound mainlanes at Salado Plaza.
  • Completed setting beams for new southbound off-ramp to Thomas Arnold Rd.

Section 1C: Salado to belton (FM 2484 to us 190/fm 436)

  • Activated the traffic signals at the I-35 frontage roads at Loop 121.
  • Opened the first lane of the new access road between Loop 121 and Shanklin Rd.
  • Opened the new southbound on-ramp just south of Loop 121.
  • Opened the new turnaround on the north side of the Loop 121 crossing.

  • Continue constructing the southbound access road between Loop 121 and Shanklin Rd.
  • Continue constructing the southbound mainlanes and culverts from FM 2484 to Loop 121.
  • Continue constructing the southbound frontage road from Shanklin Rd. to FM 2484.
  • Continue high mast illumination construction at the I-35/US 190 interchange.
  • Continue constructing the US 190 direct connect/flyover.
  • Continue paving the southbound mainlanes from US 190 to Central Ave.
  • Activate the traffic signals at the intersection of FM 436/US 190 and the frontage roads.
  • Continue placing topsoil and seed along the northbound mainlanes and frontage road.

Section 2B: TEMPLE (S. LOOP 363 TO N. LOOP 363)

LANE CLOSURES
  • Southbound exit ramp #302 (Nugent Ave.) is closed indefinitely as work on mainlanes and access road continues in this area.
Milestones
  • Completed setting the beams at the three Spur 290 structures.
  • Completed construction on the retaining wall on the southbound frontage road at Spur 290 underpass.
  • Completed construction of the embankment header for the east side of Spur 290.
  • Completed installing precast concrete panels at the three Spur 290 structures.
  • Completed pouring bridge deck on main Spur 290 structure.
  • Began concrete pavement installation at Avenue H on east side of I-35.
Down the Road
  • Continue constructing the retaining wall on the west side of I-35 mainlanes in the Nugent area.
  • Continue constructing the new off-ramp south of Loop 363.
  • Continue constructing the storm sewer on the southbound frontage road from BNSF Lampas-Sub Rail Road Overpass south.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls on the southbound frontage road at the BNSF Railroad overpass.
  • Continue concrete pavement installation on the west side of I-35 for the Spur 290 roadway.
  • Begin construction of the retaining wall to support installation of the depressed southbound mainlane section at the south end of the project.
  • Begin installing southbound frontage road pavement south of BNSF Lampasas-Sub Railroad Overpass.
  • Install the concrete rail on the southbound frontage road structures at BNSF Belco and Lampasas-Sub Overpasses, southbound mainlanes south of the southern Loop 363 interchange, and retaining walls south of the Central and Adams on-ramp and southbound frontage-road header.

Section 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

  • Finished pouring the concrete pavement on the northbound frontage road between Berger/Hart Rd. and FM 1237.
  • Completed the pavement section on the northbound frontage road between FM 1237 and FM 935.
Down the Road
  • Continue concrete paving on the southbound mainlanes.
  • Continue subgrade work for the southbound mainlanes from Berger/Hart Rd. to the end of the project.
  • Continue working on SBML bridge embankment and bridge substructure at FM 935.
  • Continue working on SBML bridge embankment and bridge substructure at FM 1237.
  • Place bridge beams for SBML bridge at Berger/Hart Rd.
  • Switch traffic onto new NBFR at South Troy Bridge between FM 1237 and FM 935.
  • Continue working on new tie-in at Pegasus Dr.

Section 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT to woodlawn rd.)

  • Poured the bridge deck at the new northbound mainlane bridge at Deer Creek.
  • Continue constructing the retaining wall at the northbound frontage-road bridge.

  • Tie in new side streets along southbound frontage road between UPRR and FM 107.
  • Continue working on the new UPRR bridges.
  • Complete concrete paving on the southbound frontage road from UPRR to FM 107.
  • Continue concrete paving on the new northbound mainlane from Big Elm Rd. to Blevins.
  • Continue building the embankment for the new southbound mainlanes from FM 107 to UPRR.

Section 3B: LORENA TO HEWITT (WOODLAWN RD. TO SUN VALLEY BLVD./FM 2063)

  • Continue paving the approaches and build median islands for the Callan Ranch Rd. bridges.
  • Complete construction of the south-to-north turnaround bridge at W. FM 2837.
  • Continue installing highway illumination.

  • Continue hanging permanent cantilevered signs.
  • Finish the southbound frontage-road paving driveways in Hewitt and on the south end of the project.
  • Begin removal of the last remaining detour pavement along the northbound mainlanes.

BRAZOS RIVER BRIDGES (WACO)

  • Continue adding landscaping elements like colored concrete, limestone rock, and lighted gabions.
  • Complete the installation of the handrail.

SECTION 4A: WACO ACCESS ROADS (MLK TO TAYLOR)

LANE CLOSURES
  • North-to-south access roads and the turnaround from MLK Blvd. under I-35 at the UPRR crossing have been permanently closed. New access roads and railroad crossing bridges will be constructed to replace them.
  • The southbound frontage road turnaround between Forrest St. and UPRR has been closed permanently at Cherry St.
MILESTONES
  • Finished constructing bent caps for the southbound and northbound UPRR frontage-road bridges.
Down the Road
  • Continue installing drainage north of UPRR.
  • Continue constructing the retaining walls for the UPRR frontage road bridges.
  • Place steel girders for teh southbound frontage-road UPRR overpass bridge.
  • Place steel girders for the UPRR frontage road bridges.

Section 5A: WACO TO WEST (N. LOOP 340 TO FM 1858)

  • Finished installing illumination.

  • Connect electric service to power feed.

Section 5B: WEST TO ABBOTT (FM 1858/TOKIO RD. TO FM 1304)
