LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020: IMPROVING I-35 & BUS-77 INTERCHANGE IN WACO

In Waco, the interchange at BUS-77 and I-35 has produced some confusion for travelers in the past as they navigate their way through town. The new I-35 reconstruction project has been planned to remedy the confusion by simplifying the interchange, alleviating congestion on the bridges, and making it safer for traffic to pass through. A chance conversation and a crazy idea in January 2019 unexpectedly led three TxDOT employees to an epic challenge and a higher call. SECTION 2B: TEMPLE (S. LOOP 363 TO N. LOOP 363)

DOWN THE ROAD

  • Continue construction on the City of Temple landscape welcome monument at N. Loop 363.
  • Continue landscaping on US 290/Industrial Blvd.
  • Continue work on punch list items.

SECTION 3A-1: TEMPLE TO TROY (N. LOOP 363 TO N. TROY CITY LIMIT)

DOWN THE ROAD

  • Install the electric meter at Pegasus Dr. (Oncor task).
  • Complete supplying power from new meter(s) to illumination in the area.
  • Complete establishing trees in the project.
  • Complete the final inspection.

SECTION 3A-2: TROY to bruceville-eddy (N. TROY CITY LIMIT TO WOODLAWN ROAD)

MILESTONES

  • Completed erosion control measures and vegetation establishment for remainder areas to cover them at least 70 percent with grass.
  • Reseeded Temp Cool with Bermuda on NBFR south of UPRR and the southbound access road north of Old Blevins.

DOWN THE ROAD

  • Complete items on the punch list for minor repairs and cleanup.
  • Complete Installation of meters on DMS Service #11, 12 and 13; Service 4A; and Service 8 (pending from Oncor).

SECTION 4B: WACO (12TH ST. TO N. LOOP 340)

MILESTONES

  • Completed reconstructing/armoring northbound mainlanes inside shoulder.
  • Completed installing the median barrier north of N. Loop 340.
  • Completed replacement of Culvert 7 (Bellmead ditch) west of I-35 at US 84.
  • Completed paving new southbound access road from LP 340 to Behrens Circle.
  • Completed full-width reconstructing/armoring of northbound mainlanes.
  • Began lead abatement of the Brazos River Bridges.

DOWN THE ROAD

  • Continue work on sewer and water lines throughout the project on the southbound access road.
  • Continue work on driveway access points on the southbound access roads from N. Loop 340 southward.
  • Continue resetting temporary barriers and shifting traffic on northbound mainlanes.
  • Continue constructing shoring columns at BUS 77 to support remaining large structures under the northbound mainlanes when demo work starts at BUS 77.
  • Complete the west end replacement of Culvert 5 (Waco Creek).
  • Construct major storm drainage trunk lines along the southbound access road between 17th and 18th Streets to University Parks Blvd.
  • Construct cul-de-sacs to replace side street intersections along the southbound access road in the area between 18th 11th Streets.
  • Continue removing existing southbound pavement from 4th and 5th Streets to the south end of the project.
  • Continue constructing drilled shafts for the new 11th and 12th Streets southbound overpass.
  • Continue building the approaches for the new 11th and 12th Streets southbound overpass.
  • Begin paving new southbound access road from University Parks to 4th and 5th Streets.
  • Continue lead abatement of the Brazos River Bridges.
  • Continue constructing drilled shafts for the 4th and 5th Streets southbound overpass.
  • Start setting beams for structure widening at the LP 340 northbound and southbound overpasses.
  • Start paving new southbound access road between Behrens Circle and US 84.
  • Start constructing sidewalk for the southbound access road between LP 340 and Behrens Circle.
  • Continue grading for southbound access road between US 84 and BUS 77.

I-35E EXPANSION (I-35 EAST/WEST SPLIT TO ELLIS COUNTY LINE)

MILESTONES

  • Began temporary shoring at FM 2959 and FM 934.
  • Began widening the culverts under I-35.

DOWN THE ROAD

  • Continue setting portable concrete traffic barrier along the northbound and southbound mainlanes.
  • Continue building temporary pavement widening to handle traffic in the next phases of the project.
  • Begin widening the culverts under I-35.
  • Begin some permanent concrete pavement widening of the northbound mainlanes.
  • Begin the drilled shaft foundations for new bridges at FM 2959 and FM 934.
  • Continue temporary shoring at FM 2959 and FM 934.
  • Begin retaining wall construction at FM 2959 and FM 934.
  • Begin work on bridges at FM 934 and FM 2959
  • Continue widening the culverts under I-35.
