Beginning in 2011, TxDOT, the City of Austin and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization formed Mobility35 with the goal of improving I-35 within Williamson, Travis and Hays counties. This locally-driven initiative, called Mobility35, is working to improve mobility on I-35 in the Capital area.
The I-35 corridor through downtown Austin is identified as one of the most congested segments of roadway in Texas. The Texas A&M Transportation Institute determined that if nothing is done to address Austin's congestion issue, the 19-mile commute from downtown Austin to Round Rock will take as long as 2.5 hours by 2035.
